Smart home users are reporting ongoing connection problems with some new Matter-compatible devices, highlighting the challenges of the industry’s push toward a unified smart home standard. Recent complaints have focused on newly released smart products from Ikea, with users saying devices fail to pair or frequently drop offline after setup.
Matter is designed to make devices from different ecosystems—such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home—work together more smoothly. However, real-world performance has proven inconsistent in some environments. Ikea acknowledged the reports and said it is aware that certain customers are experiencing connection issues during setup. The company added that it has contacted the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the group responsible for Matter, to better understand the problems and improve reliability.
Wireless pairing and long-term device stability remain complex processes. Smart devices must authenticate with hubs, maintain connections across networks, and often manage power-saving modes, all of which can introduce complications. Battery-powered devices are particularly sensitive to network conditions, which can lead to intermittent disconnections or failed pairing attempts.
While Matter aims to simplify smart home integration, early adoption has shown that compatibility does not always guarantee seamless performance. Industry observers say improvements will likely come through firmware updates and continued coordination between manufacturers and standards groups.
For now, users encountering pairing problems are advised to check network settings, firmware updates, and device compatibility while manufacturers work to address reported issues.
