Spotify is introducing a new feature designed to make playlist transitions feel more seamless and DJ-like. Premium subscribers can now automatically sort and rearrange their playlists based on BPM (tempo) and musical key, helping songs blend together more naturally.
The feature, called Smart Reorder, analyzes tracks within a playlist and organizes them to optimize flow. To use it, Premium users can open a playlist in the Spotify app, navigate to Mix > Edit > Smart Reorder, and let the system handle the rearrangement with a single tap. Once satisfied, users simply save the changes for the new order to take effect.
By grouping songs with similar tempos and compatible keys, Spotify aims to reduce abrupt shifts between tracks—something especially useful for workout mixes, party playlists, or extended listening sessions. The feature builds on last year’s custom transitions update, which introduced smoother crossfades and mixing-style playback.
According to Spotify, listeners have already streamed more than 220 hours of mixed-style playlists using its transition tools. With BPM and key-based sorting now automated, the company is positioning the feature as a way for everyday users to create more professional-sounding listening experiences without manual track adjustments.
Smart Reorder is currently available to Spotify Premium subscribers.
