Apple has introduced the AirPods Max 2, and many users are now debating whether to go for the company’s premium over-ear headphones or opt for the more compact AirPods Pro 3. With a hefty $549 price tag, the Max 2 clearly targets a high-end audience, but for many buyers, the decision may come down to whether the added cost truly delivers extra value beyond what the Pro 3 already offers.
From a software perspective, both the AirPods Max 2 and the AirPods Pro 3 are nearly identical. They are powered by Apple’s H2 chip, which enables a shared set of advanced features such as Adaptive Audio, Live Translation, Conversation Awareness, and improved noise cancellation. Users also get Transparency Mode, Personalized Volume, Voice Isolation, and deeper Siri integration on both models, meaning the day-to-day smart experience is largely the same regardless of which device you choose.
In addition to these features, both models support studio-quality voice recording, improving clarity across calls, FaceTime sessions, voice memos, and even third-party apps. They also include support for Audio Sharing and seamless pairing with devices like the Apple TV 4K for Spatial Audio experiences. This makes both options highly capable within Apple’s ecosystem, especially for users who value connectivity and convenience across multiple devices.
Where the real difference lies is in form factor and pricing. The AirPods Max 2 deliver a more immersive over-ear listening experience, which may appeal to audiophiles or users seeking long listening sessions with enhanced comfort. However, if your primary interest lies in Apple’s intelligent features rather than the physical design, the AirPods Pro 3 offer nearly the same functionality at a much lower cost. For many users, pairing the Pro 3 with a separate set of over-ear headphones from another brand could be a more practical and cost-effective solution.
