Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 with several hardware and health-focused upgrades. While Apple has sometimes introduced smartwatch features later than competing wearable brands, the latest generation brings changes aimed at improving performance, battery life and activity tracking.
At the centre of both new watches is Apple’s S11 chip, marking the first major processor upgrade for the company’s wearables since 2024. The new silicon is designed to deliver faster performance while also supporting additional AI-powered capabilities, including Apple’s upcoming Audio Intelligence features.
Battery efficiency is another area benefiting from the new processor. Apple says the S11 chip helps the Apple Watch Ultra 4 deliver around eight additional hours of battery life, potentially making the device more practical for extended workouts, outdoor activities and overnight health monitoring.
Apple has also focused heavily on improving heart-rate tracking with the Series 12 and Ultra 4. The company claims its latest sensor system provides its most accurate heart-rate measurements yet, with several of the improvements remaining exclusive to the newest generation of watches.
Step tracking has received attention as well, with Apple introducing a refined algorithm intended to provide more accurate pedometer readings. Combined with the upgraded processor and health sensors, these changes make fitness and activity monitoring a central part of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 upgrades.
