Modernizing IBM Z Systems: IBM Watsonx Targets COBOL to Java Transformation

IBM is making strides to assist customers using IBM Z systems in modernizing their applications by expanding the capabilities of its generative AI, Watson Code Assistant. This advancement includes the ability to translate COBOL code into Java, aiming to address challenges arising from the declining number of COBOL developers and the need for accelerated application development on mainframe systems.

The new product, known as Watsonx Code Assistant for Z, builds upon IBM’s existing Code Assistant previewed earlier this year. Leveraging Watsonx.ai’s foundational code model, this tool is designed to generate Java code compatible with the Z operating system, facilitating the transformation of monolithic COBOL applications into more agile Java-based solutions.

According to IBM, Watsonx Code Assistant for Z will feature automated code refactoring capabilities. This process involves extracting business services from existing COBOL applications without altering their fundamental logic or output, thereby preserving functionality while enhancing maintainability and scalability.

To initiate the code refactoring process, developers will utilize the application discovery and delivery intelligence tool (ADDI), currently under development. ADDI helps identify dependencies within the target application and generates a metadata repository, crucial for understanding the application’s structure and requirements.

IBM emphasizes the importance of a separate tool used to open the workbook and extract specific business service COBOL code, which is then transformed into Java classes by Watsonx Code Assistant for Z. This transformation process involves analyzing both the COBOL code and associated data structures to ensure accurate generation of Java equivalents.

Upon generating Java code, developers can compare its output with the original COBOL code before deployment. IBM highlights the flexibility of the tool, allowing developers to modify or enhance the generated Java code as needed throughout the transformation process.

Looking ahead, IBM plans to include tools like ADDI alongside Watsonx Code Assistant for Z upon its general availability later this year. These tools are expected to further streamline and enhance the code modernization journey for IBM Z system users, supporting their efforts in maintaining and evolving legacy applications effectively.

Beyond COBOL-to-Java translation, IBM is exploring additional applications of its Watson Code Assistant, such as generating content for the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform. This initiative aims to empower developers by providing AI-generated recommendations for writing Ansible Playbooks, further demonstrating the versatility and potential impact of AI in modern software development environments.
