Microsoft Commits €4 Billion to Boost AI and Cloud Infrastructure in France
Driving Technological Advancements and Economic Growth through Strategic Investment
Microsoft has announced a €4 billion ($4.3 billion) investment to expand its artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure in France, with initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, skills development, and support for startups.
The investment includes plans to supply up to 25,000 graphics processing units to enhance data center sites in the Paris and Marseille regions by the end of 2025. Additionally, new data center facilities will be established in the Grand Est Region in Mulhouse, enabling the delivery of Microsoft cloud and AI services to both public and private sector organizations in these areas.
Franck Leroy, President of the Grand Est Region Council, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “With this major project, the Grand Est region is making Alsace a benchmark region for AI in France and Europe. This unique project, benefiting from a technological first, will strengthen the competitiveness of our regions and businesses, while guaranteeing the security of their data. It is also a major project of national and European interest.”
In alignment with its data center expansions, Microsoft is pursuing renewable energy contracts in France, with plans to have approximately 100 megawatts of new renewable energy projects online by the end of 2024.
Furthermore, Microsoft aims to train one million French individuals with AI skills by 2027 through collaborative efforts with partners, government institutions, non-profit organizations, and higher education providers.
Additionally, Microsoft will offer AI support to 2,500 French startups by 2027 through its newly launched initiative, Microsoft GenAI Studio. This program will provide startups with AI expertise, cloud credits, and opportunities for collaboration with customers and partners.
