Oracle Health and General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) are joining forces in a groundbreaking initiative to modernize the Indian Health Service’s (IHS) electronic health record (EHR) system. As an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, IHS plays a crucial role in delivering federal health services to 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives across 574 federally recognized tribes in 37 states. The collaboration, under a 10-year, $2.5 billion contract, will see GDIT replacing the existing system with a state-of-the-art, cloud-based enterprise EHR system provided by Oracle Health.
Mike Sicilia, Executive Vice President of Oracle Global Industries, highlighted Oracle Health’s proven track record in the most complex operating environments, including supporting the US Department of Defense worldwide. The partnership with GDIT aims to introduce modern, secure systems to IHS, benefitting the agency’s staff and millions of individuals relying on their services.
The new Oracle Health EHR system, hosted on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) known for its high performance, security, and compliance, will empower IHS and tribal health facilities. The system’s cloud-based architecture is designed to enhance care team coordination and elevate patient experiences. By offering modern tools and streamlined access to data through a single, comprehensive health record for each patient, clinicians can make more informed decisions, ultimately contributing to improved healthcare outcomes.
Operational scalability is a key feature, ensuring that the EHR system can adapt to future program needs. Hosted in a secure Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) high cloud environment, the system prioritizes data security and compliance.
Kamal Narang, GDIT’s Vice President and General Manager for Federal Health, expressed anticipation for the next phase of collaboration, building on over two decades of partnership with IHS. GDIT has been instrumental in delivering mission-critical IT systems, including the development and maintenance of the agency’s current health records system. The new EHR system is poised to further support the health and well-being of millions of American Indians and Alaska Natives.
