Edge Now Notifies You About Extensions That Affect Performance

Extensions can enhance your browser with helpful functions, such as tracking price fluctuations, altering website appearances, or blocking unwanted ads and scripts. However, poorly optimized extensions may end up slowing down your browsing experience due to their inefficient coding, which can cause delays as they perform background tasks or modify web pages.

To help tackle this, Microsoft is introducing a feature in its Edge browser that detects when extensions are impacting performance. This “extension performance detector” will alert you if any of your installed extensions are using too many resources and contributing to slower browsing speeds.

The feature provides a pop-up notification with details on which extensions are responsible for the slowdown, allowing you to quickly disable them or manage them directly from the alert window.

As reported by BleepingComputer, the extension performance detector is currently available in Edge Canary version 130, which you can access by joining the Microsoft Edge Insider program. To enable it, enter “edge://flags” in the address bar, search for “extension performance detector,” set the flag to Enabled, and restart your browser. The detector will only flag extensions that are excessively resource-intensive, so if you don’t receive any alerts, it means your extensions are running smoothly.
