PowerToys App from Microsoft Now Lets You Pull Audio from Videos

Microsoft PowerToys to Add Audio Extraction and Video Transcoding Features

PowerToys, Microsoft’s suite of powerful Windows utilities, is about to expand its functionality with two exciting new features: the ability to extract an audio track from a video file and the capability to transcode videos between different formats. These additions will make PowerToys even more indispensable for users working with multimedia files.

Instead of adding a new utility app, Microsoft will be integrating these features into the existing Advanced Paste tool within PowerToys. This new feature will allow users to “paste” video or audio files elsewhere, making the process of extracting audio or converting video formats seamless. XDA Developers first highlighted this update, which promises to bring powerful new functionality to PowerToys without requiring additional software installations.

Transcoding, the process of converting video files between formats and resolutions, can significantly impact the size and compatibility of video files. It’s a common practice in media workflows, especially for those who need to prepare videos for different devices or optimize them for streaming. While most cloud-based video services handle this process automatically, being able to transcode videos directly on your computer can be a huge benefit for those needing more control. Handbrake, a popular open-source transcoding tool, is widely used for these tasks, but integrating such functionality into PowerToys could streamline the process for many users.

The ability to extract audio from video files will also be a game-changer, particularly for users who want to isolate a soundtrack or remove dialogue from videos for editing. Whether you’re a content creator or simply looking to adjust a video for personal use, this new tool in PowerToys will make it easier to manipulate your video files.

The feature is still under testing, according to Windows developer Clint Rutkas on Twitter/X. As noted on the official GitHub page, the feature is still in the discussion phase and may be adjusted or rejected before release. Alongside these upcoming updates, Microsoft has added ZoomIt—a simple yet effective tool for zooming into presentations and marking up the screen—into PowerToys, further enhancing its utility for both professional and personal use.
