Microsoft Store Testing Modular Game Downloads to Save Storage and Data

One of the biggest complaints about PC gaming via the Microsoft Store has been its rigid update system and lack of mod support. But Microsoft is testing a new feature that could make game management a little easier—modular downloads, now available in Windows Insider Build 27888 (Canary Channel).

With this update, players can select which game components to install or remove. Many games today ship with multiple modes—single-player campaigns, multiplayer, co-op, and more—along with high-resolution texture packs meant for high-end GPUs. If you don’t need certain features or don’t have a cutting-edge PC, skipping these optional downloads can save both storage and bandwidth. Once installed, users can return to the game’s Microsoft Store page, hit “Manage,” and modify their game files without redownloading everything.

While Steam remains the go-to platform for most PC gamers, this is a small but welcome change—especially for those who use Game Pass or want to manage their data caps more efficiently. If Microsoft continues making similar improvements, its gaming platform could become a more competitive choice in the future.
