Windows 11 to Remind Users to Set Up Password Recovery Options
Windows 11 users who forget their Microsoft account password could soon have a smoother recovery process, thanks to a new feature being tested in preview update KB5053660. Microsoft is rolling out push notification reminders that will prompt users to add a backup email or phone number to their accounts—ensuring they have a way to reset their password if they ever get locked out.
Using Windows 11 without a Microsoft account is technically possible, but Microsoft strongly encourages users to sign in with one, as it enables cloud services, seamless sync between devices, and access to exclusive features. The downside? Forgetting a Microsoft account password can be frustrating, especially for users who haven’t set up a secondary recovery method like an email or phone number.
Typically, resetting a password on most digital accounts is as simple as clicking a “Forgot Password” link and receiving an email. But without a registered recovery option, Microsoft account users may find themselves locked out, with limited ways to regain access.
The new Windows 11 push notifications aim to prevent this problem by proactively reminding users to set up recovery methods before an issue arises. Currently, the feature is available to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels, as reported by Windows Latest. If all goes well, it’s expected to roll out to all Windows 11 users later this spring.
By ensuring that more users have a backup recovery method in place, Microsoft hopes to reduce account lockouts and improve the overall user experience.
