AWS Revises Pricing Strategy for Its AI-Powered IDE
Just a week after opening its public preview, AWS is already introducing limits on Kiro, its agentic AI-driven IDE, and placing new users on a waitlist. The move comes as part of a broader reassessment of how the service is being used, with AWS aiming to ensure a smooth and consistent experience for everyone. Jay Raval, a specialist solutions architect at AWS, explained that these temporary measures include both daily usage limits for existing users and a waitlist to manage new sign-ups.
Initially, Kiro users were promised up to 50 free agentic interactions per month, but AWS has not confirmed the exact number, citing evolving usage patterns. “While we’re not sharing specific limits just yet, that’s only because things are still evolving,” Raval wrote on Kiro’s official Discord channel. The company is actively monitoring system performance and adjusting thresholds based on real-world usage, signaling that flexibility will continue to be a key part of Kiro’s early preview period.
AWS had originally outlined three pricing tiers for Kiro: a free tier capped at 50 agentic interactions per month, Pro at $19 per month for up to 1,000 interactions, and Pro+ at $39 per month for up to 3,000 interactions. However, feedback from developers raised concerns about how interactions are counted, how tasks completed are measured, and how different model specifications are handled. In response, AWS removed the detailed pricing information and stated that it is reviewing its approach to better align with developer needs.
During the preview period, Kiro remains free within reasonable limits, with AWS encouraging users to continue providing feedback. Updated pricing details and tier information will be shared once the company finalizes its revised plans. The move underscores the challenges of scaling an AI-driven IDE while balancing accessibility, system performance, and developer expectations in the early stages of deployment.
