Edge users who venture beyond Microsoft’s official extension store could soon have additional protection against malicious add-ons. Extensions installed via the Microsoft Edge Add-ons Store are already vetted for safety, but sideloaded extensions—those installed from unofficial sources—carry inherent risks. They are untested and may contain malware or disrupt browser performance.
A new feature in development, according to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, will automatically detect and revoke harmful sideloaded extensions, improving browser security for Edge users. Microsoft plans to make this feature widely available starting November 2025.
In the meantime, users are advised to be vigilant with sideloaded extensions, as the protection won’t be in place until the public rollout. This update represents Microsoft’s ongoing effort to enhance security while maintaining flexibility for advanced Edge users.
