Office app icons get a sleek redesign with fluid, rounded visuals

Microsoft has introduced a sweeping redesign of its Microsoft 365 app icons, giving Office a fresh and modern visual identity. The new icons are more colorful, curvier, and visually accessible, reflecting Microsoft’s effort to modernize the suite while making the apps feel friendly and approachable. This redesign also closely aligns with Microsoft’s AI initiatives, especially Copilot, highlighting how the icons serve as more than simple symbols—they communicate the connected, intelligent nature of Microsoft 365.

According to Jon Friedman, CVP of Design and Research for Microsoft 365, icons are deceptively powerful, acting as the first point of interaction for users and distilling complex functionality and brand identity into a single, recognizable image. The redesign centers around four principles: delightfully simple, fluid shapes, rich colors, and instant recognizability. For example, Word’s icon now uses three horizontal bars instead of four, reducing visual noise and enhancing clarity even at smaller sizes. Other apps follow similar simplifications while adopting soft curves and flowing lines that replace rigid geometry, giving the suite a sense of movement and playfulness.

Color is a major focus in the update. Microsoft has expanded gradients, creating vivid, high-contrast hues that make icons stand out across devices and improve accessibility. Letter plates remain in place to maintain brand equity but are more seamlessly integrated into the new cohesive visual system. The overall result is a set of icons that feel modern without losing the familiarity that long-time Office users expect.

The redesign also incorporates AI-inspired design cues, especially influenced by Copilot’s visual identity, signaling Microsoft’s integration of AI into everyday productivity tools. The refreshed icons are part of a wider effort to create a more connected, visually consistent, and user-friendly Microsoft 365 experience. Users can expect the rollout to take place immediately, bringing a bright, dynamic, and approachable design to all the core Office applications, from Word and Excel to PowerPoint and Outlook, as Microsoft continues to evolve its productivity suite for a modern era.
