Google Search AI Mode will use personal data for tailored answers

Google has expanded its Personal Intelligence feature to AI Mode in Google Search, enabling the AI to offer more personalized responses by optionally tapping into a user’s Gmail inbox and Google Photos library. This update lets the search engine’s AI Mode tailor suggestions based on personal context such as travel plans found in booking confirmations or memorable images from past trips. For instance, AI Mode could recommend activities for an upcoming holiday by combining flight details in email with destination photos, or suggest clothing based on user style inferred from photos.

Access to the new feature is rolling out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the United States as part of an experimental Labs rollout, and users must explicitly opt in to connect their Gmail and Photos. Google emphasizes that users retain control over Personal Intelligence and can disconnect these apps at any time via settings. The company also states that it does not train its AI models directly on personal emails or photos; only specific prompts and responses during AI Mode interactions contribute to model improvement.

The enhancement builds on earlier Gemini updates and represents Google’s continued push to integrate personal data — only with permission — into its AI tools to make responses feel more relevant and context-aware. While privacy controls are highlighted, Google acknowledges that mistakes can occur and offers mechanisms for users to correct or give feedback on recommendations that may not align with expectations.
