Apple Vision Pro Etiquette: Shaping a Considerate Tech Experience

Apple’s pioneering foray into spatial computing with the Vision Pro has stirred excitement, promising to revolutionize communication, play, and work. However, the potential societal impact of this $3,500 device is at risk of being overshadowed by a burgeoning trend of what can only be described as Glasshole behavior, as captured and shared on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.

The term “Glasshole” emerged over a decade ago, originally characterizing individuals sporting Google Glass in public spaces, often to the discomfort of those around them. The use of augmented reality glasses during face-to-face interactions, casual strolls, or even in meetings raised concerns about the user’s engagement with their immediate surroundings.

Regrettably, the early days of Apple’s Vision Pro reveal a resurgence of Glasshole behavior, exemplified in cringe-inducing TikTok videos. Users seem oblivious to social norms, wearing the bulky device during routine activities, such as ordering coffee or commuting. These instances not only raise eyebrows but also underscore the potential for spatial computing to become a divisive force rather than a unifying technological leap.

Despite the Vision Pro’s “passthrough” feature, seamlessly blending the virtual and real world, users appear detached from their surroundings. Videos depict individuals gesticulating wildly, navigating crowded streets or public transportation with apparent disregard for fellow commuters. One alarming trend involves users wearing the device while driving, a practice vehemently warned against by Apple and rightfully condemned by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

While some argue these videos may be staged for attention, the risk of normalized Glasshole behavior poses a serious threat to Apple’s ambitions in spatial computing. Apple, to its credit, explicitly advises against using the Vision Pro in situations that could jeopardize safety, but not all users adhere to these guidelines.

If this Glasshole trend persists unchecked, it could tarnish not only Apple’s reputation but also hinder the widespread adoption of spatial computing. The success of iconic devices like the iPod was rooted in their seamless integration into daily life without causing annoyance or endangerment. As Vision Pro users, relish the technological marvel, but let’s not sacrifice common decency in the process. Whether at Starbucks or on the road, the courtesy extended to others ensures the innovative journey remains positive and inclusive.
