Microsoft’s Xbox 360 online store has officially closed its doors, concluding a significant chapter in gaming history. Announced in August 2023 and scheduled to shut down in July 2024, the store’s closure means that digital downloads for Xbox 360 games, movies, and TV shows are no longer available.
Released on November 22, 2005, the Xbox 360 became a beloved console, known for classics such as Halo 3 and Gears of War 2. Despite being succeeded by the Xbox One in 2013 and discontinued in 2016, the console’s digital marketplace remained operational until today.
What Happens to Your Games Now? Though the online store is no longer functional, players who have already installed Xbox 360 games can continue to play them. Multiplayer functionality will depend on whether developers have kept their servers active. Additionally, game saves can be transferred from the cloud, although this feature’s availability may not be indefinite.
In the lead-up to the store’s closure, Xbox 360 game discs saw a rise in value, with prices for popular games like Tomb Raider and Call of Duty increasing by an average of 14%. With Microsoft focusing more on digital and subscription services like Xbox Game Pass, the era of physical game copies is waning, though Game Pass continues to provide a cost-effective option for accessing new titles.
