Managing large photo libraries on Windows 11 may soon be much easier thanks to a new AI-driven feature arriving in the Photos app. Microsoft announced in a Windows Insiders blog post that “Auto-Categorization” is now available for testing across all Insider channels. The feature automatically organizes images into specific categories, helping users quickly locate important files buried in large collections. However, this capability is limited to Copilot+ PCs, as it leverages the dedicated AI processing power built into those systems.
Currently, Auto-Categorization supports four types of image groups: receipts, identity documents, screenshots, and notes. The AI analyzes each image to determine its category, and it is designed to work regardless of the language of text captured in the image. Users can also override the AI’s decision if a photo is categorized incorrectly, ensuring accuracy. While the feature’s scope is fairly narrow at launch, Microsoft has hinted at the potential for future updates, though it remains unclear whether additional categories will be added or if users will gain the ability to define their own.
The functionality is included in Photos app version 2025.11090.25001.0 and newer, with the rollout already underway to Windows Insiders on Windows 11. For users who frequently save a mix of personal and work-related images, the feature could provide a more seamless way to keep collections organized without relying solely on manual folder structures. As Microsoft continues to expand its AI initiatives across Windows, features like Auto-Categorization highlight how on-device AI could evolve to streamline everyday tasks on PCs.
