AWS is taking a major step toward reducing uncertainty in enterprise cloud planning with the launch of Capabilities by Region, a new tool designed to give businesses deeper visibility into AWS’s global service landscape. The tool allows organizations to see which services, tools, and features — including AWS CloudFormation resources — are available or planned for rollout across different AWS regions.
For enterprises managing complex, multi-region deployments, this level of transparency is crucial. Without clear insight into service availability, companies risk unexpected delays, compliance issues, or inflated operational costs. Analysts say the new tool addresses a long-standing challenge around regional service parity — where enterprises often discover missing features too late in the deployment process, leading to expensive rework and scheduling setbacks.
According to Forrester vice president and principal analyst Charlie Dai, Capabilities by Region offers “authoritative, forward-looking visibility” into AWS’s infrastructure roadmap. This, he said, enables teams to plan workloads with confidence, knowing which regions will support specific services in the future. The inclusion of planned feature rollouts also sets AWS apart from competitors like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. While Azure’s availability portal lists services by geography, it doesn’t include forward-looking timelines; Google’s Region Picker, meanwhile, focuses more on optimization factors like latency and carbon footprint than on feature planning.
Analysts believe this forward transparency could translate into significant cost savings. Pareekh Jain of Pareekh Consulting noted that as much as 30% of cloud budgets are wasted due to underutilized resources or lack of planning visibility. By offering a clearer view of regional capabilities, AWS aims to help enterprises avoid such waste. Accessible through AWS’s Builder Center — rather than the main Management Console — the tool is designed to be safe for non-admin users and partners. Additionally, AWS plans to integrate Capabilities by Region data into its AWS Knowledge MCP Server, enabling developers to automate cloud planning or tap into AI-driven deployment recommendations.
