Elon Musk has announced plans for Grokipedia, an alternative to Wikipedia that will be developed by his artificial intelligence company xAI. The name references Grok, Musk’s in-house AI chatbot, which he describes as a tool designed to search for truth. According to Musk, Grokipedia will share Wikipedia’s encyclopedic structure but will use AI to ensure what he claims will be greater neutrality and accuracy in its content.
The decision underscores Musk’s long-running criticism of Wikipedia, which he has accused of leaning toward left-wing political views and failing to uphold objectivity. Those criticisms were recently echoed by Musk ally David Sacks, who serves as an AI advisor to Donald Trump and has described the site as “hopelessly biased.” Sacks also questioned the use of Wikipedia material in training large AI models, pointing to a need for alternatives. Musk is positioning Grokipedia as that alternative, though details about how it will function and who will contribute to it remain scarce.
Still, Grok’s track record raises significant concerns about how reliable the project will be. The chatbot has faced backlash for producing anti-Semitic content, which Musk’s team blamed on programming flaws. Independent reviews, however, suggest that Grok’s responses can be heavily influenced by human intervention behind the scenes, fueling skepticism over whether Grokipedia will truly live up to its promise of impartiality. At this stage, the project remains in its early phases, with no confirmed release date or clarity on whether it will be open to the public.
Meanwhile, Musk continues to fight competitive battles in the AI marketplace. Just months earlier, he filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, claiming they conspired to sideline Grok in favor of ChatGPT by manipulating App Store rankings and prolonging the approval process. At the time, ChatGPT held the top spot on iOS, while Grok ranked just 22nd and X was positioned at 28th. Musk argues this dynamic unfairly distorts competition, though Apple has pledged that iOS will eventually support a wider range of AI models. Against this backdrop, Grokipedia could emerge not only as a technological project but also as part of Musk’s broader strategy to challenge entrenched players across the digital knowledge and AI landscape.
