HP LaserJet Printers Hit by Firmware Glitch, Users Left Unable to Print
A new HP firmware update has rendered some LaserJet printers unusable, even when using official HP toner cartridges, as reported by Ars Technica. The problematic update, version 20250209, was rolled out on March 4, 2025, and is affecting HP LaserJet MFP M232 to M237 series printers. Users have reported Error Code 11 and flashing toner warnings, making it impossible to print.
What’s Going Wrong?
HP’s official statement on the update claims it includes security enhancements, regulatory updates, and general bug fixes, with no mention of toner-related changes. However, many users have taken to HP’s support forums, reporting that their printers refuse to recognize HP-branded toner cartridges after installing the update. Attempts to clean contacts, reseat cartridges, or reset the printers have been unsuccessful.
HP has acknowledged the issue but hasn’t confirmed how many users are affected, stating:
“We are aware of a firmware issue affecting a limited number of HP LaserJet 200 Series devices and our team is actively working on a solution. For assistance, affected customers can contact our support team at: HP Support.”
HP’s Troubling Track Record with Firmware Problems
This isn’t the first time HP firmware updates have left users frustrated and without a functioning printer. In May 2023, a firmware update bricked several HP OfficeJet models, causing blue screen errors that persisted for weeks. The company has also been widely criticized for its aggressive DRM policies, which prevent printers from working with third-party ink and toner, as well as its controversial always-online and subscription-based printing restrictions.
With no fix currently available, affected users may have to wait for a patch from HP, though rolling back the firmware may be an option for some. Until then, HP’s reputation for heavy-handed firmware control is once again under scrutiny.
