Microsoft Reduces Restore Point Retention in Windows 11 to 60 Days
If you count on system restore points to recover your Windows 11 PC after a bad update or driver install, there’s a change you need to know about. As of the June 2025 security update, Windows 11 version 24H2 will only retain system restore points for 60 days, down from the previous 90-day window.
This change, quietly included in Microsoft’s official documentation, states:
“Restore points older than 60 days are not available. This 60-day limit will also apply to future versions of Windows 11, version 24H2.”
That means any system snapshot older than two months will now be automatically discarded, even if disk space isn’t an issue. With Windows 11 25H2 expected later in 2025, it’s likely this shorter retention will continue there as well.

Search for “recovery” in the Start menu and click “Create a restore point.”

Under the System Protection tab, select your system drive and click Configure.

Ensure “Enable System Protection” is turned on, then click OK.

To manually save your current system state, click Create, give it a name (like “Post-driver install – June 23”), and confirm.
While Windows will automatically generate restore points before updates, creating your own ensures you have a fallback before major changes. Just remember: with this new policy, you’ll need to act within 60 days if you plan to roll things back.
