Microsoft Extends Windows 10 ESU Support Through October 2027

Microsoft has begun notifying Windows 10 users that it is extending the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program by an additional year. Eligible systems enrolled in the program will now continue receiving security updates until October 12, 2027, instead of the previously announced end date of October 12, 2026.

The announcement was delivered via email to existing ESU participants, although many Outlook users may have overlooked it because it reportedly landed in the “Other” inbox rather than the “Focused” tab.

ESU Program Gets Another Year

The email, titled “Stay secure for another year,” confirms that Windows 10 users enrolled in the ESU program will continue receiving critical security updates for an additional 12 months.

The extension only applies to devices that are already registered for the Extended Security Updates program. Windows 10 users who have not enrolled will not receive these additional updates.

Microsoft Softens Its Position

Microsoft’s latest move marks another shift in its approach to Windows 10.

For several years, the company strongly encouraged users to replace older PCs with Windows 11-compatible hardware as Windows 10 approached its end of support. However, after initially extending ESU coverage to October 2026, Microsoft has now pushed the deadline back once again to October 2027.

The decision likely reflects the continued popularity of Windows 10, which remains installed on a significant number of PCs worldwide.

Who Received the Email?

According to reports, the notification was only sent to users who have already joined the Windows 10 ESU program.

The email simply informs current participants that their extended security coverage has been prolonged by another year. No action is required from recipients, and there is no need to renew or respond immediately.

What If You’re Still Using Windows 10 Without ESU?

Users who continue running Windows 10 without enrolling in the Extended Security Updates program will no longer receive ongoing security patches after standard support ends.

Without these updates, systems become increasingly vulnerable to newly discovered security flaws, malware, and other cyber threats over time.
