LEGO’s retro gaming sets have been targeting millennial nostalgia, but one modder took things beyond display status. Natalie The Nerd, a veteran Game Boy modder, has turned the official LEGO Game Boy set into a fully functional handheld, keeping the exterior LEGO aesthetic intact while housing real Game Boy hardware inside.
Her approach preserves the brick buttons and cartridge slots, with modifications only to the screen and cartridge area. Custom 3D-printed parts enable proper button functionality, while USB-C power (hidden in a 3D-printed brick) and a backlit LCD screen bring modern enhancements to the classic design. The system runs authentic Game Boy cartridges, avoiding emulation entirely, which makes it an impressive technical feat.
The project is nearing completion, though the test unit may still lack a battery pack. Once finished, Natalie plans to publish the full mod plans, giving DIY enthusiasts the chance to replicate this marriage of LEGO creativity and retro gaming magic. For anyone who loves hands-on builds and nostalgia, this is a mod worth watching.
