Next.js Adopts Webpack 5 for Accelerated Build Speeds

Vercel’s Next.js framework has taken a significant leap forward with its latest release, leveraging Webpack 5 to enhance performance and streamline development workflows. The update, announced on April 28, focuses on accelerating build times and improving application refresh capabilities, making it easier for developers to deliver high-performance React applications.

With the introduction of Webpack 5, Next.js 10.2 enables improved disk caching, allowing the compiler to retain progress from previous builds. This optimization ensures that only modified files are recompiled, resulting in build time improvements of up to 63% for subsequent runs. By default, applications without custom Webpack configurations in their next.config.js file will automatically benefit from these enhancements.

Beyond faster builds, Webpack 5 also brings additional advantages, including enhanced fast refresh capabilities and better long-term asset caching. Developers can now take advantage of tree-shaking for CommonJS modules, enabling the removal of unused code to further optimize application performance. These updates make Next.js 10.2 a robust choice for modern web development.

The release includes other key improvements aimed at boosting both development and user experience. Start-up performance has been refined through more efficient Next.js initialization processes. Routing capabilities have been enhanced with support for a has property, allowing matches against incoming cookies, headers, and query strings. Additionally, automatic web font optimization now inlines CSS at build time, reducing load times and improving metrics like First Contentful Paint (FCP) and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). This feature currently supports Google Fonts, with plans to expand to other providers and add more control over font loading strategies. These updates empower developers to ship faster websites while improving Core Web Vitals, ensuring optimal performance for end-users.
