Roblox surpasses Steam with 45 million concurrent players

Roblox continues to cement its dominance in online gaming, recently achieving a staggering 45 million concurrent players on August 23rd—a new high that outpaces Steam’s all-time peak by about 5 million. To illustrate just how significant this is, Fortnite’s peak concurrency is 14.3 million, while Minecraft—often considered the most popular sandbox game globally—averages around 32 million daily players with a peak of 4.2 million. Roblox’s sheer scale is unmatched, underscoring its position as a cultural juggernaut in gaming.

Unlike Steam, which serves as a distribution platform, Roblox operates as an entire ecosystem where users can create and share games through accessible development tools. Its presence across PC, mobile devices, PlayStation, and Xbox makes its reach even broader. The most popular Roblox experience right now, “Steal a Brainrot,” reached 20 million players simultaneously during the same event. Estimates suggest half of all U.S. children between ages 6 and 16 regularly play Roblox, making it a defining entertainment hub for a generation, though only a small fraction of players are over 25.

But the platform’s rapid success isn’t without major concerns. Many active users are bots or idle accounts manipulating the in-game economy, while the monetization model itself is seen as exploitative. Roblox encourages creators—often minors—to develop content in exchange for potential payouts, yet developers must first earn 30,000 Robux before converting their work into real money. Even then, they receive only a third of the equivalent value. Despite this, Roblox’s ecosystem has become so lucrative that some teams manage million-dollar projects, with the company paying out $300 million in Q2 2025 and generating over $2 billion annually.

The darker side of Roblox involves safety. With a user base dominated by children, the platform has been plagued by predator activity, inadequate safeguards, and controversial moderation. The state of Louisiana is suing Roblox Corporation for failing to protect minors after a scandal in which a YouTube creator who tracked and reported predators to police was banned from the platform. These controversies highlight the tension between Roblox’s explosive growth and its ongoing struggles with child safety, ethical monetization, and fair labor practices.
