A dangerous scam is currently spreading on WhatsApp, targeting unsuspecting users with seemingly innocent messages. Typically sent from unknown numbers, the messages contain a single image and a question such as, “Is this you?” The trap? The image isn’t harmless—it’s been altered to carry malware capable of compromising your device and stealing personal data. In some cases, attackers can even blackmail victims once access is gained.
The scam leverages a flaw in WhatsApp’s image processing system. When an image is downloaded, the app parses it in small data packages. If malware is embedded in these packages, it executes silently while you view the image. This can allow scammers to access your WhatsApp account and intercept other data on your device.
Preventing this scam requires caution: do not open images or files from unknown sources, block suspicious numbers, and turn off automatic downloads via Settings > Storage and data > Auto-download media. Always ensure WhatsApp is updated to the latest version to fix known vulnerabilities. If you stay vigilant, you can avoid falling victim to this deceptive and potentially damaging trick.
