Coming in October, the update will allow Windows 11 users to automatically toggle between light and darkmodes on a set schedule.

If you haven’t explored PowerToys yet—Microsoft’s official add-on suite that adds dozens of extra features to Windows—it’s definitely worth checking out. One of the most popular tools is FancyZones, which allows you to customize Windows’ snap functionality for improved productivity. But an exciting new update is on the way for the fan-favorite program: automatic light and dark mode switching in Windows 11.
This feature will debut in PowerToys version 0.95, according to Niels Laute, Windows Platform Senior Product Manager. Laute confirmed that the update is expected next month (October 2025) and will also include a revamped user interface for the Keyboard Manager tool. The ability to switch between light and dark modes automatically based on a user-defined schedule fills a long-standing gap, given how extensively these visual modes are used across Windows and other major applications. This developer update was first reported by The Verge.
Meanwhile, version 0.94 introduces several smaller but useful improvements. The most notable addition is a search bar, allowing users to quickly locate specific tools and settings within PowerToys. With the suite now containing more than two dozen tools and hundreds of settings, this new search functionality is a highly practical enhancement.
Other tweaks in the latest release include a shortcut conflict manager and new customization options for the Mouse Pointer Crosshairs tool. For those eager to try the improvements now, the latest version of PowerToys is available for download on GitHub.
