Oracle’s Ellison Declares Generative AI as the Most Transformative Technology in History

Generative AI to Redefine Application Development and Operations at Oracle, Says CTO Ellison

At Oracle’s annual technology conference, Oracle CloudWorld, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Larry Ellison unveiled a bold vision for the future of application development powered by generative AI. In his keynote address, Ellison shared that Oracle’s new applications will primarily be generated by AI, signaling a fundamental shift in how software will be built within the company. “Generative AI. Is it the most-important technology ever? Probably,” Ellison told a packed audience, emphasizing the transformative potential of this emerging technology.

Generative AI, which refers to artificial intelligence capable of creating new content, represents a breakthrough that could revolutionize not just Oracle’s approach to software, but the entire tech industry. Ellison stressed that this technology is poised to be a key driver of innovation, allowing developers to create new applications faster and more efficiently than ever before. For Oracle, this marks a significant departure from traditional coding practices, with AI taking center stage in generating new applications.

In his address, Ellison revealed that this shift would dramatically alter the role of Java in Oracle’s future. “We’re not going to be writing new applications anymore in Java. Not new ones,” he said, noting that while Java will still be used for ongoing development and maintenance, new projects will be driven by AI-generated code. This move signals a pivot from manual coding to leveraging AI-driven automation to create the code for new applications, vastly accelerating the development process.

Oracle’s primary tool for implementing this change is its Oracle APEX platform, a low-code and no-code application development framework. According to Ellison, APEX allows Oracle to develop applications faster, with smaller teams, and greater security. APEX-generated applications are also more reliable, featuring built-in statelessness and automatic failover capabilities. Ellison highlighted that AI-driven development through APEX eliminates many common security vulnerabilities, reducing the risk of human error in application code.

The use of APEX in combination with generative AI represents a key component of Oracle’s broader strategy to modernize application development. Ellison believes this approach will enable Oracle to deliver more scalable, secure, and resilient applications while also reducing development costs. By automating code generation and streamlining the development lifecycle, Oracle aims to stay ahead in the competitive enterprise software market and push the boundaries of what’s possible with AI.

Looking ahead, Ellison expects generative AI to continue playing an increasingly central role in shaping the future of Oracle’s product offerings. As AI becomes more integrated into the software development process, it has the potential to redefine how applications are conceived, built, and maintained, offering businesses unprecedented speed and agility in deploying new solutions. Oracle’s embrace of generative AI signals a major step forward, not just for the company, but for the industry as a whole, as it opens up new possibilities for innovation in application development.
