Windows Copilot Key Reassignment: Customize Your Laptop’s Shortcut Soon

Microsoft may be rethinking its approach to the Windows Copilot key, following its earlier adjustments to the Copilot integration within Windows.

The most recent Windows Insider Beta Channel build (Build 22635.4225) now includes a new option that allows users to repurpose their laptop’s Copilot key. This means you can customize the key to open a different app rather than Copilot itself, thanks to a new setting found under Windows Settings > Personalization > Text Input.

The introduction of this “Customize Copilot key on keyboard” feature is significant in two ways. First, its inclusion in the Beta Channel indicates it’s likely to make its way to the Release Channel and eventually to standard Windows PCs. Secondly, the fact that this change doesn’t require any specific configuration to get the latest updates suggests that Microsoft has finalized this adjustment.

Copilot was originally embedded within the Windows 11 operating system, but it has since become a standalone app, still retaining a central position on the desktop.

By allowing users to customize the Copilot key, it seems Microsoft might be shifting its stance on Copilot’s role. This raises the question of whether Copilot is evolving from a general-use feature to something more tailored for business environments, especially since the introduction of the Copilot key was relatively recent at just nine months ago.
