The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), a prominent Thai state enterprise, is taking a significant leap in its digital utility transformation with Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management (MDM) system and Oracle Utilities Load Analysis. This strategic move aims to enhance operational efficiency and achieve substantial cost savings. PEA’s Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) project, in collaboration with Oracle, establishes a fully integrated system offering crucial visibility into daily power consumption, benefiting its 23 million residential customers and 300,000 commercial and industrial (C&I) customers across 74 provinces.
In addressing previous challenges related to multiple meter brands and disparate MDMs, PEA has successfully migrated 155,100 meters to Oracle Utilities MDM and Oracle Utilities Load Analysis in the first half of 2023. This consolidation enables PEA to overcome the complexities of billing integrations and operational support, providing accurate daily energy usage data and forecasting capabilities.
Mr. Pramote Sudsap, Deputy Governor of Operation and Maintenance at PEA, emphasized the impact of evolving technologies and industry dynamics on PEA’s core business. He highlighted the pivotal role of smart meters and data management systems, such as Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management and Oracle Utilities Load Analysis, in adapting to emerging technologies, facilitating energy savings, and contributing to the future development of the electricity industry.
Oracle’s solutions empower PEA to harness the full potential of meter data, enabling data capture, management, and synchronization across diverse meter types and protocols. The prebuilt data and meter Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), along with prioritized dashboards, provide valuable insights into meter and device performance. This strategic implementation supports PEA’s customer service initiatives, promoting efficient energy management among customers in alignment with national and international policies.
Taveesak Saengthong, Managing Director at Oracle Thailand, highlighted the enhanced visualization of energy usage for both residential and C&I customers through smart meter data. The enriched data enables PEA to improve power generation and transmission efficiency, providing customers with near real-time notifications and supporting them in reaching their target energy usage.
With plans to add the remaining 300,000 commercial and industrial meters post-2023 and extending the AMI project to 800,000 meters in the Eastern Economic Corridor by 2025, PEA is set to establish the Oracle MDM system as the single source of truth, handling interval meter data for complex and profit-determining segments. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of PEA and Oracle to shaping a more efficient and innovative energy landscape in Thailand.
