Using Route Handler Filters in ASP.NET Core 7 Minimal APIs

ASP.NET Core 6 brought a significant shift to how web APIs are built by introducing a streamlined hosting model designed to simplify the development process. This model supports the creation of minimal APIs, a lightweight approach that forgoes the traditional use of controllers in favor of a more compact syntax with fewer dependencies. While this simplification speeds up development and reduces complexity, it comes with certain trade-offs, notably the absence of several familiar ASP.NET features. One of the most notable features missing from minimal APIs in ASP.NET Core 6 was the use of filters.

Filters are powerful tools in ASP.NET for manipulating requests and responses or for intercepting and altering the execution pipeline. Fortunately, ASP.NET Core 7 addresses this limitation by introducing the IRouteHandlerFilter interface. This new feature allows developers to apply filters in minimal API routes, giving more control over the API behavior. With route handler filters, you can implement logic to modify incoming requests, transform outgoing responses, or even short-circuit the pipeline under specific conditions, providing greater flexibility and maintainability in your API design.

The integration of route handler filters in minimal APIs opens up a range of possibilities for developers. For example, you can use filters for tasks such as logging request details, validating incoming data, or setting custom headers on responses. This enhanced functionality makes minimal APIs in ASP.NET Core 7 more robust and suitable for a wider variety of use cases. By leveraging filters, you can write cleaner, more modular code, reducing the need for repetitive logic scattered throughout your endpoints.

To get started with route handler filters in ASP.NET Core 7, ensure that you have the necessary development environment set up. The examples in this guide require Visual Studio 2022 Preview, as some features may not be available in older versions. If you haven’t already, you can download and install Visual Studio 2022 from the official Microsoft website. Once your environment is ready, you can explore how to create and apply filters effectively, transforming how you build minimal APIs in ASP.NET Core. In the following sections, we’ll walk through practical examples and best practices for using route handler filters to enhance your APIs.
