HDMI 2.2 Specs Set to Be Unveiled at CES 2025 in January

HDMI 2.2: A Sneak Peek Before CES 2025

While HDMI 2.1 is still the go-to standard for most PC and TV video interfaces, a major shift is on the way with the announcement of HDMI 2.2 at CES 2025, taking place from January 7-10, 2025. The official unveiling will take place on January 6th, with key figures like Chandlee Harrell, Rob Tobias, and Brad Bramy set to present the new standard.

HDMI 2.2 will bring a focus on higher bandwidth and support for a wider range of resolutions and refresh rates, with a new HDMI cable designed to accommodate these enhancements. Currently, HDMI 2.1 operates at 48Gbps, supporting up to 120Hz at 4K, while DisplayPort 2.1 offers 80Gbps. HDMI 2.2 will need to exceed that if it’s to maintain its place as the top video interface.

This shift is crucial not only for consumers but also for hardware manufacturers like Nvidia and AMD. Both companies are preparing to launch their next-generation GPUs—Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series and AMD’s RX 8000 series—at CES 2025, but whether HDMI 2.2 will be integrated into these GPUs remains uncertain.
