Claude may soon ask some users for ID verification

Anthropic to Introduce Identity Verification for Some Claude Users

Anthropic is updating its privacy policy to allow identity and age verification for a subset of Claude users. Beginning July 8, the company may require certain users to verify their identity by submitting a government-issued ID, such as a passport, driver’s license, or national identity card.

The change is intended to strengthen account security and help enforce the platform’s policies, but it has already sparked concerns among privacy-conscious users.

    Why Anthropic May Request Identification

According to Anthropic, identity verification may be used in limited circumstances to:

    • Verify a user’s age
    • Protect user accounts
    • Prevent fraud
    • Investigate abuse or security incidents
    • Enforce its terms of service

The company says only a small percentage of users are expected to encounter these checks.

    Verification Handled by Persona

Anthropic will use the U.S.-based identity verification company Persona to process verification requests.

Rather than storing copies of identification documents indefinitely, Anthropic says it will retain the outcome of the verification process—for example, confirming whether a user meets minimum age requirements.

    Privacy Concerns Remain

Despite Anthropic’s assurances that the policy will affect relatively few users, the move has raised concerns among members of the Claude community.

Many AI users value services like Claude for their focus on privacy and are wary of submitting sensitive government-issued documents, even when processed through a third-party verification provider.

Part of a Broader Industry Trend

Anthropic is not alone in moving toward stronger identity verification.

Several major technology platforms have recently introduced or explored similar measures:

    • Discord implemented age verification in some regions, prompting criticism from users.
    • Reddit has considered identity verification to combat automated bot accounts, drawing backlash.
    • OpenAI introduced age verification for certain users of ChatGPT following a high-profile case involving a teenager.

The growing adoption of verification measures reflects increasing regulatory pressure on AI companies to address safety, misuse, and age-appropriate access while balancing user privacy.

    A Delicate Balance

As generative AI services continue to expand, companies face mounting pressure to verify users without undermining trust.

Anthropic maintains that the new policy is designed to improve security and comply with legal obligations, but its success will likely depend on how frequently these checks are required and how transparently user data is handled.
