Simplified USB Labels Make Buying Easier

Shopping for a USB4 docking station? Thanks to a new USB labeling scheme, identifying the technology and speed of USB products has never been simpler. Gone are the days of confusing technical names like “USB 3.2 Gen 2” or vague marketing terms like “SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps.” Now, USB products display clear, speed-focused labels, such as “USB 40Gbps” or “USB 80Gbps” on their packaging.

Introduced by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) in 2022, this updated branding emphasizes what truly matters: speed and capability. It applies to the latest USB specifications, including USB4, and even eliminates consumer-facing terms like “USB4v2” for simplicity. With these changes, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting, whether it’s a high-speed docking station or a compatible cable.

This change addresses a common frustration with USB-C ports on many devices, which often lack clear labels indicating their speed or functionality. For instance, users might struggle to distinguish between a basic 10Gbps USB-C port, a modern USB4 port, or a Thunderbolt connection. While Thunderbolt 4 and USB4v2 are nearly identical (aside from Intel’s certification), consistent labeling could help reduce confusion. Rumors suggest companies like Dell may soon start labeling their ports accordingly.

Additionally, the updated USB logo scheme extends to cables, ensuring users can easily see both the data transfer speeds and power delivery capabilities they support. As Jeff Ravencraft, president of the USB-IF, explained, this change ensures that consumers focus on the features that truly matter without wading through unnecessary technical jargon.
