In the early stages of automation, robotic process automation (RPA) combined with low-code platforms and orchestration tools helped organizations improve productivity and scale operations efficiently. Virtual agents and chatbots took this further, enhancing user experiences by introducing conversational interfaces. With the advent of large language models (LLMs), vector databases, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and other generative AI technologies, the landscape of automation expanded, enabling capabilities such as summarizing content, generating code with AI copilots, and providing conversational question-and-answer systems.

AI agents are poised to take this evolution even further, integrating automation, conversational capabilities, and process orchestration to create the next wave of digital transformation. These AI-powered assistants can act as proactive collaborators, automating repetitive tasks and providing support through role-based workflows. This shift allows business users, developers, and other stakeholders to focus on more strategic work while leveraging AI agents to handle the repetitive aspects of their roles. The integration of generative AI with workflow automation represents a significant opportunity for businesses to achieve not just productivity gains but also transformative changes in how work is done.

According to Simon Margolis, Associate CTO of AI/ML at SADA, AI agents are crucial for bringing practical, measurable applications of generative AI into enterprises. “Their unique ability to act—write data, make API calls—gives businesses an edge by turning AI tools into collaborators that can perform tasks that would otherwise be time-consuming for humans,” he explains. This ability to automate complex actions beyond mere information retrieval will unlock new efficiencies, especially for businesses looking to streamline operations and optimize workflows.

The market for AI agents is rapidly growing, with major platforms like Appian, Atlassian, Cisco Webex, Salesforce, SAP, and Workday already rolling out AI agent capabilities this year. Additionally, public cloud agents such as Amazon Q Developer are being embedded into the developer experience, signaling the widespread adoption of these tools. Valued at $3.86 billion in 2023, the AI agent market is projected to grow at an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 45.1% from 2024 to 2030, highlighting the transformative potential of AI agents in the future of work.
