Amazon Introduces GenAI-Powered Inline Chat for Q Developer

Amazon Q Developer Enhances Inline AI Chat for Seamless Coding

Enterprise developers value efficiency, and even minor improvements in workflow can have a significant impact. To support this, Amazon has introduced an upgraded version of its generative AI-powered in-IDE chat feature for Amazon Q Developer. Unlike previous implementations that required copying and pasting AI-suggested code from a separate window, the new inline chat function integrates directly into the code editor. This enhancement is available in popular development environments, including Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDEs, allowing developers to interact with AI suggestions more fluidly.

According to Amazon’s announcement, the updated chat experience enables developers to highlight code sections and request AI-powered actions such as optimizing code, adding comments, or generating test cases—all within the editor itself. Built on Amazon Bedrock, the inline chat functionality is powered by the latest version of Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which launched in October. By leveraging this advanced model, Amazon aims to provide more accurate and contextually relevant suggestions, enhancing developer productivity.

Industry analysts have taken note of the improvements, particularly Amazon’s decision to use the newest version of Claude Sonnet. Jason Andersen, VP and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, pointed out that Amazon’s model switch likely reflects internal data suggesting better reliability and performance. He speculated that the company may reveal additional insights about developer acceptance rates at its upcoming re:Invent conference in December.

Andersen also emphasized the usability benefits of inline AI chat compared to traditional side-panel implementations. “The ability to engage directly with AI in the code makes a significant difference,” he noted. “Previously, developers had to shift between windows, which could be clunky. By making the AI more contextual, Amazon Q Developer is likely to drive higher acceptance rates for code suggestions.” As AI-powered development tools continue to evolve, Amazon’s latest update positions Q Developer as a strong contender in the competitive landscape of AI-assisted coding.
