    MSI’s Claw A8 Introduces AMD-Powered Gaming Handheld

When it comes to gaming PCs, the choice between Intel and AMD is a well-worn conversation. But in the world of handheld gaming PCs, there haven’t been many options—until MSI’s new Claw A8 came along. For the first time, a major vendor is giving you the choice to pick either Intel or AMD hardware inside your handheld, making the Claw A8 stand out in a growing but still limited market. At Computex, Adam Patrick Murray caught up with MSI’s Product Management Director Cliff Chun to get the scoop on what’s new.

The Claw A8 largely builds on the design of the earlier Claw 8 AI+, with an 8-inch 120Hz screen and a similar layout, including the same battery size. What’s really new is what’s inside—the Claw A8 uses the new AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme mobile chip, which called for a fresh motherboard design and improved cooling. MSI says this update brings the device closer to other handhelds you might know, like the Steam Deck, in terms of power and design.

MSI’s main goal with the Claw A8 is to maximize battery life while keeping games running smoothly at 60 frames per second. The company estimates about two hours of gameplay on a charge, which might feel a bit short if you’re used to gaming laptops. But keep in mind, handhelds pack smaller batteries and focus purely on gaming rather than other tasks. They’ve also moved the speakers a bit higher on the device so your hands don’t block the sound while playing.

Alongside the Claw A8, MSI will keep selling the Claw 8 AI+ and the original 7-inch Claw models, which all run Windows on Intel processors. Pricing and exact release details for the A8 haven’t been announced yet, and MSI isn’t currently talking about a SteamOS version, unlike competitors like Lenovo who are exploring that option with devices like the Legion Go S.

If you’ve been waiting for a handheld gaming PC that lets you pick between AMD and Intel processors, MSI’s Claw A8 is definitely one to watch. Its familiar form factor, modern hardware, and Windows ecosystem support make it a strong contender for gamers on the go later this year.
