KDE Invites Windows 10 Users to Ditch Microsoft and Go Linux

The clock is ticking for Windows 10, with October 14 marking the official end of Microsoft’s support. After that date, users will no longer receive critical security patches, performance updates, or compatibility assurances for future applications. Microsoft’s solution? Upgrade to Windows 11—if your PC meets the requirements. If not, the company recommends trading in or recycling your old system and purchasing a shiny new Windows 11 machine.

But what if you don’t want to throw away a still-working computer? What if you find Windows 11’s new interface and policies off-putting? That’s where KDE’s new campaign, called “KDE for Windows 10 Exiles,” comes in. Rather than toss your PC into the recycling bin, KDE suggests a smarter, more sustainable path: switch to Linux, using their user-friendly Plasma Desktop environment.

Plasma Desktop is designed to provide a familiar, intuitive experience for those coming from Windows. It features an app launcher akin to the Start menu, a customizable panel similar to the taskbar, and a notification area that mirrors Windows’ system tray. But Plasma goes further, allowing you to tailor nearly every aspect of the UI to suit your needs—all without the performance overhead that newer versions of Windows often bring.

Though Plasma isn’t a Linux distribution itself, it integrates with many KDE-compatible distros. OpenSUSE, Kubuntu, Fedora KDE, and Manjaro KDE are just a few that make it easy to adopt Plasma. KDE recommends OpenSUSE as a beginner-friendly option, and it offers a Quick Start Guide to walk users through the installation process with ease.

The KDE campaign serves as a timely reminder: Microsoft’s end-of-life date doesn’t have to spell the end for your PC. With Plasma and Linux, you can extend the life of your machine, enjoy a privacy-respecting and efficient OS, and avoid contributing to growing e-waste. If you’re among the millions facing the Windows 10 sunset, it might be time to explore what Linux—and Plasma—have to offer.
