Adaptive laptop displays headline Lenovo’s radical PC concepts

At IFA 2025 in Berlin, Lenovo once again leaned into its tradition of using global trade shows to share forward-looking concepts. The company’s new prototypes are less about raw performance and more about rethinking ergonomics, usability, and flexibility in everyday computing. Chief among them is the Smart Motion Concept, a motorized laptop stand that intelligently adjusts itself to follow the user’s face. By keeping the screen aligned at the right angle, Lenovo hopes to reduce eye strain and neck discomfort, while also ensuring the built-in webcam always has an ideal position for video calls.

This new stand echoes Lenovo’s earlier AI Display prototype, which debuted at CES and MWC earlier this year. That monitor housed its own NPU, enabling AI features on connected PCs and allowing the display to swivel, tilt, and lift itself automatically depending on who sat down in front of it. The Smart Motion Concept extends this philosophy into laptop setups, offering similar benefits in a more compact, personal form factor. Early demos showed it smoothly tracking a person’s movements as they shifted around the room, evoking the same kind of adaptive following seen in advanced webcams like the OBSBOT Tiny 4K.

Another concept grabbing attention is the ThinkBook VertiFlex, which reimagines a 14-inch clamshell notebook with a screen capable of rotating into portrait orientation. At a weight of roughly 3.06 pounds, the design seems realistic for everyday use, and portrait mode could become invaluable for professionals who frequently work with documents, spreadsheets, or programming code. Lenovo also teased that the design may accommodate smartphone integration when a device is placed against the back of the vertically aligned display, although the exact function—charging or otherwise—remains ambiguous.

Finally, Lenovo teased additional exploratory projects, including the Magic Bay Tiko smart screen and the use of an AI-powered control ring for gesture-based navigation across devices. While it’s unclear if or when these prototypes will evolve into shipping products, Lenovo’s IFA 2025 showcase underscores its commitment to blending AI, hardware design, and human-centered ergonomics into future computing solutions. Much like IBM once seeded the industry with experimental research, Lenovo continues to position itself as a driver of innovation in PC design.
