Paint introduces layer-friendly project files for easier editing

Windows 11’s Paint is evolving beyond its long-standing role as a basic sketching tool, now incorporating features that put it closer to full-fledged creative software. The latest update introduces the ability to save projects in a new .PAINT file format, according to The Verge. This format preserves layers, letting users continue complex projects later without losing edits—a workflow similar to professional graphics apps like Photoshop and GIMP.

Additionally, Paint’s Pen and Brush tools now feature opacity sliders, giving users real-time control over transparency while working directly on the canvas. This complements existing functionality such as dark mode, layer support, transparency options, and AI-driven image generation, further enhancing the app’s creative potential.

Currently, these improvements are available to Windows Insiders, with no confirmed release date yet for the general Windows 11 audience. Nevertheless, Microsoft’s additions point to a future where Paint is more than a casual tool—it’s becoming a lightweight, practical option for more serious digital art and design projects.
