Raspberry Pi continues to innovate with the release of the Pi 500+, a fresh take on the budget keyboard computer concept first introduced with the Pi 400. This new version combines a retro-inspired 75% keyboard form factor with modern mechanical switches, offering both nostalgia and functionality for Pi enthusiasts.
The mechanical design features low-profile Gateron clicky blue switches with removable keycaps, complete with a keycap puller included in the box. RGB backlighting adds visual flair for gamers or anyone who wants to customize the look of their keyboard. The 500+ is available in multiple layouts and languages, including US ANSI for North American users. While hot-swap functionality is absent, those familiar with DIY electronics can still modify it thanks to Raspberry Pi’s user-friendly design.
Performance upgrades make the 500+ more than just a keyboard upgrade. It comes pre-installed with a Raspberry Pi 5 sporting 16GB of RAM—the highest supported so far—and a 256GB NVMe SSD, which is replaceable with other standard M.2 drives. This allows users to enjoy a highly capable computing experience in a compact, all-in-one package. It’s perfect for coding, media consumption, or casual gaming without the need for a full desktop setup.
The kit carries a price of $200 USD, $80 higher than the standard Pi 500 and significantly more than the base Pi 5, but the mechanical keyboard, upgraded memory, and storage make it a compelling package for enthusiasts. Note that, as with prior models, you’ll need an external power supply, monitor, and mouse to operate the system. The Raspberry Pi 500+ is currently available through all official retail partners, including CanaKit and PiShop.us.
