JetBrains has announced it is ending development of the Fleet IDE, citing the difficulty of sustaining two general-purpose development environments in parallel. According to the company, IntelliJ-based IDEs remain its primary focus, and Fleet was unable to establish itself as a viable standalone alternative.
The decision was disclosed on December 8, with JetBrains confirming that Fleet will no longer be available for download after December 22. While existing users can continue running the IDE, no further updates will be released, and features that depend on backend services — including the AI Assistant — may gradually stop functioning. JetBrains said that attempting to recreate the full depth of IntelliJ functionality within Fleet failed to deliver enough added value, while maintaining overlapping products led to fragmentation and diluted effort.
Despite its discontinuation, JetBrains described Fleet as a successful experiment from both a technical and design standpoint. Built around a lightweight architecture, a modern user interface, and greater flexibility, Fleet served as a testing ground for new ideas. Many of its components have already been integrated into JetBrains’ other IDEs, and several of its UI and UX innovations are now reflected across the broader product lineup.
Fleet was first introduced as a preview in late 2021, initially positioned as a lightweight, multi-language IDE and later reframed as a smart editor with advanced assistance features. JetBrains explored the possibility of turning Fleet into a second flagship IDE family but ultimately concluded that users needed a clearer incentive to switch from established tools like IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, or WebStorm. Although Fleet was briefly considered as an AI-first editor, market research suggested that another AI-centric IDE would struggle to differentiate itself, especially amid numerous AI-enhanced Visual Studio Code alternatives.
Instead, JetBrains plans to carry forward the agentic AI workflows and development environment concepts pioneered in Fleet into its existing IDE ecosystem. The company said these technologies will eventually be released as a new product under a different name, with its positioning and target audience still evolving.
