Valve targets a summer launch for Steam Machine but keeps pricing secret

Valve Targets Summer Launch for Steam Machine 2 and Steam Frame VR Headset

Valve has confirmed that both the second-generation Steam Machine and the new Steam Frame VR headset are scheduled to launch this summer, marking the company’s most ambitious hardware expansion since the introduction of the Steam Deck.

The announcement comes alongside news that both devices will receive dedicated game verification programs similar to the successful Steam Deck Verified system.

Steam Verification Expands Beyond Steam Deck

According to Valve, developers will soon be able to certify games for compatibility with both upcoming platforms.

The verification programs aim to help users quickly identify titles optimized for:

    • Steam Machine 2
    • Steam Frame VR
    • Steam Deck

The move follows the success of Steam Deck Verified, which became a key factor in helping users navigate thousands of PC games on handheld hardware.

Launch Delays Linked to Hardware Shortages

While Valve is still targeting a summer release window, both products have already experienced delays.

The company had originally hoped to provide pricing and launch details much earlier in the year. However, the ongoing shortages of DRAM and flash memory have complicated production planning across the PC industry.

Rising component costs have affected virtually every segment of the market, from gaming PCs to laptops and handheld devices.

Steam Machine 2 Faces Pricing Challenges

The upcoming Steam Machine is expected to deliver significantly stronger performance than previous Valve hardware.

    Reported specifications include:

    • 16GB RAM
    • AMD discrete graphics with 8GB VRAM
    • Desktop-class gaming capabilities
    • Console-style living room design

However, these specifications come at a difficult time for hardware manufacturers.

Industry pricing estimates suggest that building a comparable desktop PC using currently available components would cost more than $1,000 before factoring in manufacturing, distribution and support costs.

Even with economies of scale, analysts believe keeping the Steam Machine below the psychologically important $1,000 threshold may prove challenging.

Steam Frame Targets Premium VR Market

Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame headset appears to position itself as a high-end standalone VR device.

    Reported hardware includes:

    • Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor
    • 16GB RAM
    • Standalone operation
    • Advanced tracking sensors
    • Dedicated VR controllers

The headset’s architecture places it closer to premium mixed-reality devices than entry-level VR products.

    Competition Remains Expensive

The Steam Frame will enter a market increasingly dominated by premium hardware.

Devices such as Samsung‘s XR headset have demonstrated how expensive next-generation standalone VR systems can become, with some configurations approaching $1,800.

Valve may attempt to undercut competitors, but component costs remain a significant obstacle.

Valve’s Biggest Hardware Push Since Steam Deck

The launch of both products signals Valve’s continued effort to expand beyond traditional PC gaming.

The Steam Machine aims to strengthen Steam’s presence in the living room, while the Steam Frame could help the company re-establish itself as a major player in the VR market following the success of the Valve Index.

For now, the biggest unanswered question remains pricing. While Valve has confirmed a summer launch target, gamers are still waiting to learn exactly how much these new devices will cost in a hardware market that remains under significant pressure from component shortages and rising manufacturing expenses.
