Windows 11 adds fingerprint sign-in support for desktop PCs

Windows 11 Update Adds Fingerprint Sign-In Support for More PCs

Microsoft has begun rolling out a new Windows 11 feature that allows users to sign in with a fingerprint even on computers without a built-in fingerprint reader. The capability arrives as part of the KB5101684 preview update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, expanding the reach of Windows Hello’s biometric authentication.

The update enables compatible desktop PCs and laptops to use external fingerprint readers that support Microsoft’s latest security standards.

Windows Hello Now Supports External Fingerprint Readers

With KB5101684, Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) now works with supported external fingerprint sensors.

The new functionality extends fingerprint authentication to:

    • Desktop PCs
    • Windows 11 laptops without integrated fingerprint readers
    • Copilot+ PCs that lack built-in biometric hardware

Previously, fingerprint sign-in was generally limited to devices equipped with integrated fingerprint sensors.

    How to Set It Up

To use the new feature, users must connect an external fingerprint reader that supports Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS).

Once connected, fingerprint authentication can be configured by navigating to:

    Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options

From there, Windows guides users through enrolling their fingerprint for future sign-ins.

    Improved Security for More Devices

Enhanced Sign-in Security is designed to strengthen Windows Hello by ensuring biometric authentication is processed using Microsoft’s secure authentication framework.

By extending ESS support to external fingerprint readers, Microsoft allows more Windows 11 devices to benefit from biometric sign-in without requiring built-in hardware.

The feature is expected to be particularly useful for desktop users and owners of devices that previously relied solely on passwords or PINs.

Feature First Announced Earlier This Year

Microsoft originally revealed plans for expanded fingerprint reader support in January, but the feature is only now beginning to reach users through the KB5101684 preview update.

The rollout is currently available for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, with broader availability expected once the update becomes part of Microsoft’s regular monthly release schedule.
