Microsoft aims to improve Windows 11 performance on 8GB PCs

Microsoft Makes 8GB RAM PCs a Priority as Windows Optimization Efforts Expand

Microsoft is doubling down on improving Windows performance for entry-level computers, with the company’s Windows chief confirming that PCs equipped with 8GB of RAM will be a major focus moving forward.

The announcement signals that Microsoft’s recent release of 8GB Surface devices wasn’t a one-off experiment, but part of a broader strategy to make Windows run more efficiently on lower-memory hardware.

Windows Will Be Optimized for 8GB Systems

In a post outlining Windows priorities for the remainder of 2026, Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows and Devices, said Microsoft is actively working to reduce Windows’ memory footprint.

Among the company’s top priorities are:

    • Optimizing Windows for 8GB RAM and above
    • Improving the out-of-box setup experience
    • Enhancing family features and parental controls
    • Making voice interactions more natural across Windows apps

Microsoft says these efforts are intended to deliver a faster and more responsive experience on the PCs most consumers use every day.

    Reducing Windows’ Memory Usage

To achieve that goal, Microsoft is making changes throughout the operating system.

    According to Davuluri, improvements include:

    • More efficient memory allocation
    • Continued optimization of the WinUI 3 framework
    • Lower memory usage for WinUI-based applications
    • Better efficiency in Chromium and WebView2 components used throughout Windows

The company says these optimizations should reduce background memory consumption while improving overall responsiveness.

WinUI 3 Plays a Central Role

Microsoft has repeatedly identified WinUI 3 as a key part of Windows’ future.

The framework powers many of Windows 11’s modern interface elements, and Microsoft developers have already confirmed that significant work is underway to reduce the amount of RAM consumed by applications built on it.

These improvements are expected to support future updates to components such as the Start menu and Taskbar.

    Building on Earlier Windows Improvements

The new focus continues Microsoft’s broader Windows roadmap announced earlier this year.

    Since then, Microsoft has:

    • Redesigned portions of the Start menu and Taskbar
    • Reduced the prominence of Copilot across Windows
    • Simplified Widgets
    • Improved File Explorer
    • Expanded user control over Windows updates

Memory optimization has now emerged as one of the company’s highest priorities alongside usability improvements.

    Competing With More Efficient Systems

Microsoft’s renewed attention to memory efficiency comes as competitors have demonstrated that modern operating systems can perform well with relatively modest hardware.

Historically, Windows PCs with 8GB of RAM have often struggled with multitasking, browser tabs, and heavier applications.

Microsoft hopes software optimizations will make those systems feel significantly more responsive without requiring additional memory.

    Work Continues Through 2026

Davuluri said Microsoft plans to continue refining Windows based on user feedback throughout the rest of the year.

While Windows 11 officially requires only 4GB of RAM, many users consider 8GB the practical minimum for everyday use. Microsoft’s latest initiative aims to ensure that entry-level PCs deliver a smoother experience despite increasingly demanding modern workloads.
