ChatGPT Free and Go Users Get Unlimited Text Chats
OpenAI is removing text chat usage limits for ChatGPT Free and Go users, giving them unlimited access to text conversations with its flagship models. The change is expected to take effect next week.
A New Default Model
The lightest model in OpenAI’s new GPT-5.6 family, GPT-5.6 Luna, will become the default for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant. OpenAI describes Luna as faster, more reliable and more focused.
Previously, Free and Go users were limited to roughly 10–40 messages every three to five hours on flagship models before being switched to a lighter model.
Limits Remain for Heavier Features
The unlimited access applies specifically to text chat. Restrictions will still apply to more resource-intensive features, including file uploads, image attachments, image generation and voice mode.
That means users can chat freely with Luna, but intensive features will continue to have usage limits.
New “Think” Button
OpenAI is also introducing a “Think” button, which allows users to tell the model to spend more time reasoning before answering. The goal is to provide deeper reasoning and higher-quality responses when a question requires more thought.
The changes are scheduled to roll out starting next week.
