Oracle’s CTO on Generative AI: Transforming App Development and Operations

At Oracle CloudWorld in Las Vegas, Oracle’s Chief Technology Officer and co-founder, Larry Ellison, made a bold declaration about the future of application development within the company: new applications will be primarily generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Ellison highlighted generative AI as a revolutionary technology capable of creating new content autonomously, marking a significant departure from traditional development practices. He described generative AI as a breakthrough that could potentially be the most important technology ever, emphasizing its transformative impact on Oracle’s approach to software innovation.

For developers at Oracle, the advent of generative AI represents a paradigm shift in how applications will be conceptualized and executed. Ellison emphasized that while Java will still play a role, particularly in maintaining existing applications, new application development will largely rely on AI-driven code generation. This approach aims to streamline development processes, increase efficiency, and enhance security by minimizing human error and ensuring code reliability from the outset.

Oracle is leveraging its enterprise low-code and no-code platform, Oracle APEX, as a cornerstone for generating new applications. APEX enables rapid application development with smaller teams, enhanced security features that preemptively eliminate security vulnerabilities, and robust reliability through stateless applications with automatic failover capabilities. Ellison underscored these advantages, positioning APEX as pivotal in Oracle’s strategy to embrace generative AI for scalable and resilient application deployments.

Beyond application development, Ellison articulated a broader vision for AI’s transformative potential, predicting advancements that could revolutionize healthcare, including potential breakthroughs in treating Covid variants. He highlighted a global race among technologists to harness AI for societal benefit, underscoring Oracle’s commitment to leading this charge with generative AI technology. While Oracle has integrated AI into its operations for years, Ellison distinguished generative AI as a game-changer that promises unprecedented innovation and efficiency gains across industries.

In conclusion, Ellison’s remarks at Oracle CloudWorld underscored the company’s strategic pivot towards AI-driven application development and innovation. By embracing generative AI, Oracle aims not only to redefine how applications are built but also to pioneer new standards of efficiency, security, and reliability in enterprise software solutions. As generative AI continues to evolve, its transformative impact on Oracle’s offerings and the broader technology landscape is poised to reshape industry norms and drive forward a future of enhanced digital capabilities.

Oracle is using Oracle APEX, its enterprise low-code and no-code application platform, to generate most new Oracle applications. The APEX application development methodology is faster, involves smaller teams, and offers more security, with no security bugs generated, and more reliability, generating stateless applications with automatic failover, Ellison said.

AI is going to make our lives better, Ellison stressed, citing examples such as an upcoming treatment for all variants of Covid. Ellison anticipates a worldwide race to build what comes next, to build better AI and deliver a better future. Oracle has been using AI for many years but generative AI is different, he said. “Generative AI is a revolution. It is a breakthrough. It’s transformational.”
