However, despite their convenience, many of us neglect the essential task of cleaning them.
A dirty Keurig can quickly become gross, especially if used frequently and not cleaned regularly. Cleaning your machine once a week is crucial to ensure it continues to function properly and your coffee tastes fresh. Regular cleaning also prevents mold from developing.
Follow these steps to keep your Keurig in top condition:
- Preparing for Cleaning
Ensure there isn’t a used pod in the machine’s pod holder to avoid mold growth. Unplug your Keurig to make it easier to move. - Wipe Down the Exterior
Clean the outside surfaces to remove any dried coffee residue. Keurig recommends doing this daily. - Clean the Drip Tray
Regularly empty and clean the drip tray to prevent mold and odors. Use dish soap and warm water. - Clean the Water Reservoir
Hand wash the water reservoir and lid with warm water and dish soap, or place them in the dishwasher. Remove the water filter first. - Clean the K-Cup Holder
This part of the Keurig gets the most use. Remove the holder and clean it with hot water and a wipe down. Be cautious of the sharp needle. - Descale Your Keurig
Descaling is essential for maintaining your machine. Fill the reservoir with a mix of vinegar and hot water (or Keurig’s solution) and run it through without a pod. After a short sit, run plain water through a few times to remove any vinegar taste. Repeat every few months.
