TypeScript 5.5 Release Candidate Introduces Inferred Type Predicates, RegEx Syntax Checking, and Performance Improvements

TypeScript 5.5, the latest iteration of Microsoft’s popular strongly typed JavaScript variant, has entered the release candidate (RC) stage, with the final release scheduled for June 18. The RC version introduces several significant enhancements, including support for ECMAScript’s new Set methods, improved regular expression syntax checking, and various performance optimizations.

The release candidate was made available on June 6 and can be accessed through NuGet or by using the command npm -D typescript@rc. This follows the earlier beta release, which was introduced on April 25. The final version of TypeScript 5.5 is anticipated to be rolled out shortly, with improvements aimed at enhancing developer productivity and code quality.

One of the notable additions in TypeScript 5.5 is the support for new Set methods that have been proposed for JavaScript. These methods include union, intersection, and difference, which enable developers to perform set operations and return new Set objects based on the results. Additionally, methods like isSubsetOf provide functionality to check if one Set is a subset of another, returning a boolean value.

The TypeScript 5.5 RC also brings improvements to regular expression syntax checking. The checking process has been slightly adjusted to be more lenient while still flagging questionable escapes that are only allowed in ECMAScript’s Annex B. This change aims to provide a better development experience by reducing false positives and improving overall syntax validation.

In terms of performance, the TypeScript 5.5 release candidate includes several optimizations designed to enhance build and iteration times. These optimizations involve skipping certain checks in transpileModule and improving the efficiency of filtering contextual types. These changes are expected to lead to faster compilation and a more streamlined development workflow.

Overall, TypeScript 5.5 continues to build on its strong foundation by incorporating new features and improvements that align with the evolving needs of modern JavaScript development. The addition of Set methods and enhanced performance optimizations make this release a significant update for developers looking to leverage the latest advancements in the language.
